Philosophy of Assessment
I believe an assessment leader...
- recognizes assessment as not just a measure of success but a tool to be used to set goals and drive instruction; therefore, I will promote the use of both formative and summative assessment in the classroom.
- promotes goal-setting, learning targets, checks for understanding, and feedback in the everyday classroom as best assessment practices; therefore, I will develop, monitor, and evaluate the uses of these strategies in the classroom.
- applies a systems perspective and is knowledgeable about all aspects of assessment data; therefore, I will be actively engaged in day-to-day classroom instruction practices.
- knows that numbers only tell part of the story and that behind each number is a child with a story; therefore, I will develop and maintain meaningful relationships with students and families.
- significantly impacts the school culture and attitude toward assessment; therefore, I will remain positive and proactive about constantly improving assessment practices.
- grows staff in order to grow students; therefore, I will use assessment to drive teacher growth and improvement.
- limits summative assessment to only what is useful and purposeful; therefore, I will apply the data from assessments that must be given and eliminate ineffective or useless assessments.
- shares data in an organized and comprehensible manner as a place to improve and not a point of failure; therefore, I will remain organized and creative about ways to turn data into practical instructional change.
- uses data as part of an ongoing process of school improvement; therefore, I will put focus, time, and attention on each of the steps in that process to ensure its effectiveness.
